Last smoke in New York
Well well well, it looks like NYC is catching up with California. I think this is a good thing.
Smokers in New York City can no longer light up in any restaurant, bar or nightclub under strict new laws. [BBC News]
this is how i see things; the real scott
Contributing Editor: Jay!
so, scott does a lot of tooting. he sits around in his house and plays with his little machine, then he tinkers with his computer, then he eats some müesli and washes it all down with a tasty amazake beverage. every now and then i guess he might think about social issues or some such truck, but mainly he just worries about eleven dollar shirts, eighty dollar pants, bill’s laswell, and the latest dj logic release. either way, man…this is great. i’m typing about my friend…i’ve got jack sitting on my lap kneeding my tummy…this is so great. the way i see it, scott is just a pee pee head, but you gotta love him. according to kristian he’s just a little cuttie who can talk to anyone.

Two new links
First off is Tony Blair’s speech to the house of Commons. Second off is this article on Salon.
With war underway, and a Bush victory a possibility, the antiwar movement appears to be in denial about its future influence. [Salon]
I realize that both of these articles are pretty sort of criticizing the anti-war movement. Don’t misunderstand me here, you all know what side I’m on….but I think reading these with an open mind keeps you balanced.

Time!!
This post by Dave Hyatt (one of the authors of Safari) is talking about one of those things in life that has me so scared. What is it about our culture that kind of just pushes us into living such specialized lives??
I got out of web programming, because I didn’t want to look back over my life 20 years from now, and see myself hunched over a computer. Now, at Berklee, I’m getting into recording and music synth. Both of these involve me staying up nights, crouching over my computer. (Sidenote: Why isn’t technology simplifying life? Instead it seems to be just sucking it all up.)
While I enjoy what I’m doing/learning. I don’t want my whole life to become so narrowed down. I want to spend lots of time hiking. I want to travel for more than 2 weeks a year. I want to have lots of diverse friends. I want to be able to just drive somewhere for a week. I want to have time for more than one hobby.
I also want to be successful at my chosen profession…but man! The competition out there is fierce. How will I afford to live in Marin if I don’t work as hard as these other people? Is it worth living in Marin, if I don’t have the time to enjoy it? How can I make in it a world where so many people become so specialized?

A good summary of tonight’s happenings
While I’ve been busy playing with my computer, the pentagon has been eagerly playing with their toys as well. It’s sad how easy it is for me to just go on with my life.
I like the way Aaron Swartz put it in his weblog. You might also appreciate this link, and this link, both of which I got from Sheera.
Site Redesign
Okay….I’m testing out a new site design. It’s actually a whole new system powered by Movable Type. I’m really excited because I’ve finally joined the bloggenwagon and now I can take advantage of all sorts of cool blog features.
