MTBE….What’s it all about?

NO MTBE at 76For those of you that haven’t heard the news about MTBE, it’s a nasty by-product of the gasoline industry. Years back, the industry figured out that it could be used as an additive to gasoline. This meant that instead of having to dispose of it somehow, they could just sell it to us. How convenient.

It’s supposed benefit, is that it may reduce pollution to the atmosphere. This is debatable…what’s certain is that it does severely pollute our water supply.

76 has replaced MTBE with ethanol at all if it’s gas stations in California. Not that 76 is a good company or anything, but until the other companies follow it’s lead, I’m trying to buy most of my gas at 76.

I’ve compiled a few links for more info on MTBE:

yep- it's nasty either way.i think the only real way to go about it is to start charging people prices that are closer to what gas is actually worth rather than what the government subsidizes it at. just so that people get an idea of what this stuff is really worth and think twice about how they use it.
